Salut passant qui s\u2019arr\u00eate devant moi. Voici mon histoire en quelques mots ou en plusieurs pages<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Je suis le dernier t\u00e9moin – Oh\u00a0! Avec l\u2019horloge aux dauphins et quelques balcons en fer forg\u00e9 – d\u2019un bel h\u00f4tel particulier comme il y en a encore tant dans le Marais.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

L\u2019h\u00f4tel dont j\u2019\u00e9tais l\u2019entr\u00e9e a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9difi\u00e9 sur les terrains lotis par Fran\u00e7ois 1er<\/sup>\u00a0; ce roi, \u00e0 court d\u2019argent, a vendu le domaine qui avait abrit\u00e9 l\u2019H\u00f4tel Saint-Pol dont son anc\u00eatre Charles V avait fait sa demeure deux si\u00e8cles plus t\u00f4t.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

C\u2019est Paul Ardier (1563-1638), Tr\u00e9sorier de l\u2019\u00c9pargne d\u2019Henri III puis d\u2019Henri IV qui m\u2019a fait b\u00e2tir en 1604 \u00ab\u00a0entre cour et jardin\u00a0\u00bb cr\u00e9ant alors cette disposition si souvent reprise. J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 parmi les tout premiers h\u00f4tels construits dans le quartier. Mon plan ressemblait beaucoup \u00e0 mon contemporain, l\u2019H\u00f4tel de Sully, avec au premier \u00e9tage une salle de r\u00e9ception aux plafonds moulur\u00e9s et des chambres s\u2019ouvrant sur le jardin bordant la rue du Petit-Musc et m\u00eame une chapelle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la R\u00e9volution les h\u00e9ritiers de mon b\u00e2tisseur s\u2019y sont succ\u00e9d\u00e9s, mais le dernier aristocrate ayant \u00e9migr\u00e9 et combattu dans les arm\u00e9es royalistes, je fus \u00ab\u00a0partag\u00e9 avec la Nation\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019en juin 1810 que Jean-Louis Raoul (1751-1844), un industriel ayant fait fortune en fabriquant des limes d\u2019une qualit\u00e9 incomparable, m\u2019acheta. Il y installa quelques ateliers. Ses h\u00e9ritiers n\u2019eurent gu\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9gards envers moi, me sur\u00e9lev\u00e8rent de plusieurs \u00e9tages. Eh oui, je perdis alors beaucoup de mon lustre.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tant et si bien que vers 1960 on d\u00e9cida de m\u2019abattre pour construire un immeuble tout neuf pour reloger mes habitants. Mais, en me d\u00e9molissant, ma beaut\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure reparue et l\u2019Architecte des B\u00e2timents de France intervint\u00a0; mais il \u00e9tait trop tard, il ne put sauvegarder que ce portail. J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9, je crois, le dernier h\u00f4tel particulier \u00e0 subir ce sort avant que la loi Malraux ne sauve mes contemporains.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Apr\u00e8s des dizaines d\u2019ann\u00e9es sans entretien une association \u00ab\u00a0Le portail de l\u2019H\u00f4tel Raoul\u00a0\u00bb a r\u00e9uni les fonds et les comp\u00e9tences pour me redonner ma splendeur d\u2019antan. Apr\u00e8s cette cure de jouvence c\u2019est \u00e0 la Ville de Paris de m\u2019entretenir pour le restant des temps.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I am the last witness - Oh! With the dolphin clock and a few wrought iron balconies - of a beautiful private mansion like there are still so many in the Marais.<\/span><\/code><\/p>\r\n

The mansion of which I was the entrance was built on a land lotted by Fran\u00e7ois the 1st; this king, short of money, sold the estate that had housed the H\u00f4tel Saint-Pol, which his ancestor Charles V had made his home two centuries earlier.<\/span><\/code><\/p>\r\n

It was Paul Ardier (1563-1638), Treasurer of Savings for Henri III and then Henri IV, who had me built in 1604 \u201cbetween courtyard and garden\u201d thus creating this layout so often used. I was among the very first mansions built in the area. My plan was very similar to my contemporary, the H\u00f4tel de Sully, with on the first floor a reception room with molded ceilings and bedrooms opening onto the garden bordering the rue du Petit-Musc and even a chapel.<\/span><\/code><\/p>\r\n

Until the Revolution the heirs of my builder succeeded one another here, but the last aristocrat having emigrated and fought in the royalist armies, I was \"shared with the Nation\".<\/span><\/code><\/p>\r\n

It was not until June 1810 that Jean-Louis Raoul (1751-1844), an industrialist who made his fortune by manufacturing files of incomparable quality, bought me. He install a few workshops there. His heirs having hardly any respect for me, raised me several floors. Yes, I then lost a lot of my luster.<\/span><\/code><\/p>\r\n

So much so that around 1960 it was decided to tear me down to build a brand new building to rehouse my inhabitants. But, by demolishing me, my inner beauty reappeared and the Architect of the Buildings of France intervened. It was too late, he could only save this portal. I was, I believe, the last mansion to suffer this fate before the Malraux law saved my contemporaries.<\/span><\/code><\/p>\r\n

After decades of lack of maintenance, an association called \u00ab\u00a0Le portail de l’H\u00f4tel Raoul\u00a0\u00bb (The Portal of the Hotel Raoul) has gathered the funds and expertise to restore me to my former splendor. After this rejuvenation, it is up to the City of Paris to maintain me for the rest of time.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
